Coral-associated viruses and bacteria in the Ha Long Bay, Vietnam ArchiMer

Viruses inhabiting the surface mucus layer of scleractinian corals have received little ecological attention so far. Yet they have recently been shown to be highly abundant and could even play a pivotal role in coral health. A fundamental aspect that remains unresolved is whether their abundance and diversity change with the trophic state of their environment. The present study examined the variability in the abundance of viral and bacterial epibionts on 13 coral species collected from 2 different sites in the Ha Long Bay, Vietnam: one station heavily affected by anthropogenic activity (Cat Ba Island) and one protected offshore station (Long Chau Island). In general, viral abundance was significantly higher in coral mucus (mean = 10.6 +/- 2.0 x 10(7)...

Detection of siderophores in endophytic bacteria Methylobacterium spp. associated with Xylella fastidiosa subsp. pauca PAB
Lacava,Paulo Teixeira; Silva-Stenico,Maria Estela; Araújo,Welington Luiz; Simionato,Ana Valéria Colnaghi; Carrilho,Emanuel; Tsai,Siu Mui; Azevedo,João Lúcio.
The objective of this work was to study the production of siderophores by endophytic bacteria Methylobacterium spp., which occupy the same ecological niche as Xylella fastidiosa subsp. pauca (Xfp) in citrus plants. The siderophore production of Methylobacterium strains was tested according to chromeazurol agar assay test (CAS), Csáky test (hydroxamate-type) and Arnow test (catechol-type). In addition, the ability of Xfp to use siderophores, in vitro, produced by endophytic bacteria as source of iron, was evaluated. All 37 strains of Methylobacterium spp. tested were CAS-positive for siderophore production. Methylobacterium spp. produced hydroxamate-type, but not catechol-type siderophores. In vitro growth of Xfp was stimulated by the presence of...

Ecosystemes benthiques profonds et chimiosynthese bacterienne: Sources hydrothermales et suintements ArchiMer
Laubier, Lucien.
Hydrothermal communities of various species compositions have been described from the eastern and western Pacific and Atlantic. Brine and cold seeps and hydrocarbon seepages have been found off Florida, off the Oregon and Japanese subduction systems, on the Laurentian Fan, near Barbados, and off Louisiana. Biomasses range from 10 to 70 kg/m super(2), fresh weight. Basic microdistribution of species groups in aureoles centered around hydrothermal vents reveals different levels of adaptation to harsh physico-chemical conditions. Two groups of primary producers can be recognized: a highly efficient cool water group with large vestimentiferan tube worms and bivalves, and alvinellid polychaetes adapted to hot waters. Both groups are exploited by specific...

Fungal flora of the digestive tract of Triatoma infestans (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) from Argentina Boletín de la Sociedad
Marti,G. A.; García,J. J.; Cazau,M. C.; López Lastra,C. C..
A survey of the fungal microbiota of the digestive tract of Triatoma infestans (Klug) (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) adults was carried out. Insects captured in the field from different provinces in Argentina, as well as individuals reared in artificial colonies, were used for dissection. Axenic cultures of the fungal species were identified and were deposited with mycological collections at La Plata , Argentina. A total of 33 fungal species, with the exception of three that were mycelia sterilia, belonging to 11 genera were identified. Thirty two species belonged to Ascomycota (Eurotiomycetes and Sordariomycetes) and one to Zygomycota (Zygomycetes). The genera with the greatest number of species were Penicillium (15), Aspergillus (5), and Cladosporium (2). Among...

Notes on Symbiotic Decapod Crustaceans from Gorgona Island. Colombia, with a revision of the Eastern Pacific Species of Trapezia (Brachyura, Xantthidae), Symbionts of Scleractinian corals OceanDocs
Castro, P..
Collections of decapod crustaceans associated with scleractinian corals at Gorgona Island, Colombia, have provided material for a revisión of the eastern Pacific species of Trapezia (Brachyura, Xanthidae), obligate symbionts of the coral Pocillopora. Four sympatric specie are recognized: T. corallina GERSTAECKER, T. formosa SMITH, T, ferruginea LATREILLE, and T. digitalis LATREILLE. Two species of symbiotic natantian shrimps [Harpiliopsis spinigera (ORTMANN) from Pocillopora and Periclimenes soror NOBILI from asteroids] are recorded from Gorgona for the first time.

Итоги изучения фауны симбионтов промысловых черноморских двустворчатых моллюсков IBSS Repository
Холодковская, Е. В..
Crebricoma carinata
